Requirements

Non-Aggressive Dogs

Since the guests at Doggie Adventure live in a home-based 'pack' environment, we can only accept dogs who are well-socialized and get along well with other dogs, adults and children who come to play with our guests.  If your dog has ever shown any signs of aggression in the presence of other animals or people, we regrettably cannot accept them since the safety and comfort of our doggie guests is our priority.  Due to insurance issues, we also cannot accept even the friendliest Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans or Akitas.

Spayed/Neutered Dogs

All guests must be spayed or neutered.  We require spaying/neutering because it decreases the probability of aggression, territoriality and marking in the house.

Proof of Vaccination or Titer-Tests

Our resident dogs, Barney & Red Boy, have been raised holistically and we respect the choice made by many dog owners to avoid over-vaccinating their pets. We therefore accept proof of immunity from Parvo & Distemper in the form of blood tests known as titers.  If you choose not to continuously vaccinate your dogs for these two diseases, you may bring recent titer tests in lieu of vaccination documents.  We do require re-testing titers every two years, to insure that your dog continues to show immunity to these diseases.

Rabies vaccinations are required by law every 3 years in New York State, except for animals who are not in optimal health.  If you choose not to re-vaccinate for rabies we will need a current rabies titer test and a note from your veterinarian stating that re-inoculation is not advisable for health reasons.

Although not required, we recommend that you consider giving the Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine to your dog.  If you choose this option, please vaccinate at least one week prior to doggie vacation in order to insure that the inoculation will be effective.

Parasite Control

Both external parasites (fleas & ticks) and internal parasites (worms & protozoa) are unwelcome guests at Doggie Adventure.

Since we are located in a wooded area, ticks can be a potential problem, especially during the Spring & Fall seasons.  We strongly recommend using some form of flea & tick control, especially during these seasons.

We also require veterinary proof that your dog is free of worms.  This can be accomplished with a recent stool sample check (annual testing is required for dogs over the age of 5; biannual testing is required for dogs under 5 years of age).

Age and Size Restrictions

We accept dogs over the age of 10 months. Young puppies are not accepted because they do not always fit in well with a group of adult and senior dogs. There is no upper limit restriction in the size or age of dogs that we accept; in fact we love to see the happy senior "gray faces."
